The Tampa Bay Refugee Task Force is hosting a celebration of World Refugee Day. This theme of the event is “It takes the W.H.O.L.E. community: Wealth, Health, Opportunity, Literacy, and Education.” This health-education focused event will feature health screenings, refugee speakers, and an awards ceremony recognizing community leaders.

Last year, we held an event the week before World Refugee Day at the San Antonio Missions (baseball team) field. Before the game, they held a citizenship ceremony on the field and had new citizens recite the Pledge of Allegiance. We then had our Burundi Children’s Choir perform the National Anthem and someone from USCIS threw the first pitch.
I’m not sure how we can relate it to refugee health for this year, but this past calendar year has seen the development of two refugee community gardens in San Antonio. We can try to focus on refugee nutrition for 2012 and then move onwards from that in the coming years.

I like the idea of raising funds for refugee health, I am new at this position dealing directly with the refugee health. But what I would like to do and I need every body’d idea how I can get that done, is to rais fund to sponsure refugee Varicella shots, a lot of our clients get stuck on Varicella shots, because they can not afford, and this in turn stop them from adjusting thier stutus which in turn affects a lot of stuffs, e.g not being able to get drivers lience, will soon start affecting getting employement and that is huge for this population.

In the past, I raised almost $300 for an AIDS Walk by making AIDS ribbons and exchanging them for donations. This year, I would like to do something similar to raise funds to benefit refugee health in honor of World Refugee Day. Do you know of any ribbons, pins, or small craft items that go with the theme of World Refugee Day?

I made AIDS ribbons out of strips of felt then stiched them to safety pins. I was able to make about 80 pins in 2-3 hours. It was not a large investment of time once you have all the materials on hand and an assembly line method. Then I contacted my friends through email and Facebook to ask if they would donate online to my AIDS walk account in exchange for a handmade pin. When the AIDS walk was done, I sent all of the donors a pin with a hand written thank you card. Seems like a good way to raise funds. It may work well if several people did it together and reached out to their social networks for fundraising.

Tina, this is a great idea! Perhaps the refugee service provider network can participate in something like this on a national level.
